REPORT ABOUT THE RESULTS REACHED BY THE UNION WORKERS` MEETING TO DISCUSS GM/FIAT FUSION AND ITS REPERCUSSION ON BRAZILIAN WORKERS – REALIZED ON JULY, 13th IN SÃO JOSÉ DOS CAMPOS – SP – BRAZIL.

Union Workers representatives from GM and FIAT promoted a meeting on July, 13^th, in São José dos Campos – São Paulo, in order to exchange information and experiences, and to discuss GM and FIAT Joint Venture repercussion among workers. The meeting included the presence of two metal unions – CUT affiliated - representing more than 30.600 workers. We presume that about 5.800 employees from both enterprises will be affected by the fusion (transferring process to the JV new establishments); besides we are worried about the existing wage differences between the two plants: GM production workers` average wage is around (US$ 789,00 per month) superior to wages paid by FIAT (US$ 332,00 per month). From the meeting we got the following conclusions:

• Workers Union will exercise their right to put pressure on both companies to get more qualified information about the JV and its consequences;
• We will ask for an investigation about the circumstances of such JV, to be conducted on governmental level;
• We will form a common work group between the two unions in order to promote joint actions and to face future negotiations with FIAT and GM;
• A list of demands has been approved requesting for employees` stability (minimum of five years), as well as the establishment of a national contract between Union and GM/FIAT in order to guarantee workers rights and to enlarge the existing ones;
• The fight for the workweek`s length reduction from present 44 hours to 36 hours, without wage reduction, will be intensified;
• It will be guaranteed that in the event of employees transfer to other units, the existing workers representations will be the same; and that workers and union rights of representation inside the plant, through local committees or shop stewards, will also be recognized;
• A next meeting was appointed to happen on august (first week) in Betim – Minas Gerais, in order to organize and discuss a common action to be conducted inside the GM and FIAT plants, as a possible reaction against an inflexible negotiation position by GM/FIAT part.

Many important declarations of solidarity with GM workers` strike, have reached us, including those sent by GM workers representatives from Europe, and from FIAT workers in Italy.
